FAQ
  • What is PDF4U?
PDF4U is an internet service that provides an easy and affordable solution to creating PDF files from Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files. You are not required to install any software or change system configuration to use this service.

  • Do you support links and bookmarks when converting Word to PDF?
Yes and no, make sure the "Update links" item is checked in the Printing Options dialog.

Yes, if you have a link that is defined as www.sitename.com. It will be converted and work as an active hyperlink in the PDF.

No, if you're in Word and you reference a phrase and assign it to a url. The phrase will look like a hyperlink but in fact will not be an active hyperlink in the PDF.

The short answer is we use postscript as an intermediate step and postscript does not directly support active hyperlinks.

  • What are Document Settings?
    Link to Description.

  • How do I create a postscript file?
Normally if you have a postscript compatible printer already attached to your system all you have to do is check the box that says "print to file" when you print a document to the printer. This makes a file that can be uploaded to PDF4U to make a PDF.

If you don't have a postscript compatible printer you can still make a postscript compatible file. You need to install the postscript compatible printer driver on your system as if you owned that printer. When asked for the "device" that the printer is attached to just select "file". When you print it creates a postscript compatible file that can be uploaded to PDF4U to make your PDF.

  • What happens to my original file?
After the document is received and converted to a PDF, your original file and all intermediate files are deleted from our system.

  • Who has access to the PDF file?
When a document is upload for conversion it receives an identification number that is linked to the email address you used when the document was submitted. The PDF file is accessible by clicking on the link in your email to bring you to the Retrieve PDF page in your browser. Once in the browser you must enter the email address you used to submit your document for conversion. The document cannot be retrieved without the correct document id and email address.

  • I'd rather use the Retrieve PDF function than receive my document in an attachment (or my document is larger than 1 megabyte). How long do I have to retrieve my PDF from your site?
You have one day. Every evening at midnight CST, our system automatically deletes all files more than one day old. For example, when files are deleted on 10/10/04, the files dated 10/08/04 and older are removed from the system. As we improve our system and demand grows, that time will be reduced to meet our needs.

  • How do I save the PDF to my computer?
After converting your document to PDF, PDF4U will send you a link via email where you can go to retrieve your document. Open your web browser to that page. Click on the Retrive PDF button. The document will open up in Acrobat Reader either in the browser or outside the browser. Once it's opened, from Acrobat Reader menu select "File" -> "Save As." Navigate to where you would like to store the document on your computer. Then click "Save."

  • I have a Microsoft Word document that's very large. How large a file can I convert?
PDF4U accepts documents up to 12MB. If your document is larger than that, you might try splitting it into smaller documents and submitting them separately.

  • I get a DNS type error when trying to upload a large file. What's wrong?
Make sure your document is smaller than 12MB. If the problem persists please contact us.
